We just returned home from an unforgettable European adventure with my husband and my parents — including my dad’s very first trip to Europe and my parents’ first cruise outside of the Caribbean.
And while the photos are filled with volcanic craters, cappuccinos overlooking the Colosseum, colorful Italian port cities, and pizza in Naples at the exact restaurant where pizza was born… this trip also served as a powerful reminder of something I tell my clients all the time:
The best travel experiences are not just booked.
They are thoughtfully planned.
Our Original Europe Travel Plans
Our itinerary originally looked like this:
Nashville → Toronto → Iceland for 23 hours → Barcelona for several days before our Mediterranean cruise.
The Iceland stop was intentional. We had excursions planned and wanted to break up the long international journey before arriving in Spain.
But during our connection in Canada, airline disruptions completely changed our routing.
Instead of heading to Iceland, we unexpectedly spent an extra day in Canada before flying directly to Barcelona the next day.
Which meant:
- Missing our Iceland excursions entirely
- Reworking logistics quickly
- Leaning on travel insurance
- Adjusting plans in real time
And honestly?
This is exactly where working with an experienced travel advisor matters.
Travel disruptions do not always ruin a trip.
But they do require flexibility, strategy, and knowing how to pivot quickly.
Why I Always Recommend Arriving Early for Mediterranean Cruises
Thankfully, we still arrived in Barcelona several days before our cruise departed.
Exactly as planned.
Because I always recommend arriving early for European cruises — especially Mediterranean cruise itineraries.
Not because I expect something to go wrong.
But because international travel has a lot of moving parts.
Flights get delayed.
Connections get missed.
Luggage occasionally takes the scenic route.
Transportation systems shift.
Travel logistics evolve quickly.
And Europe deserves more than landing exhausted and immediately boarding a cruise ship.
Those extra days gave us time to:
- Recover from jet lag
- Adjust to the pace of Europe
- Explore Barcelona without rushing
- Visit the breathtaking Sagrada Familia
- Ease into vacation mode before the cruise even began
That buffer transformed the experience from stressful to seamless.
Mediterranean Cruises Are Very Different from Caribbean Cruises
If you have only cruised the Caribbean, Mediterranean cruises can feel like an entirely different style of travel.
The pace is faster.
Port days are longer.
There are fewer sea days.
And the focus shifts heavily toward culture, history, food, and exploration.
Some days on our trip were packed with adventure:
- Hiking Mt. Etna in Sicily and climbing into one of its volcanic craters
- Exploring Pompeii
- Visiting St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome
Other moments were intentionally slower:
- Breakfast and cappuccinos overlooking the Colosseum
- Wandering Italian port cities with no agenda
- Long meals and slower afternoons
- Enjoying pizza in Naples where pizza was born
And honestly?
Those slower moments became some of our favorite memories.
Because Europe is not meant to be rushed.
The Part of Travel Planning Most People Never See
Even once we were already overseas, we were still monitoring the moving parts behind the scenes.
During the trip, we kept an eye on:
- A planned national train strike in Italy
- International travel developments
- Health-related travel conversations happening globally
- Ongoing transportation and logistics changes throughout Europe
We have also seen an increase in reports of excursions around Rome being unexpectedly canceled or adjusted, which is something I am actively helping clients navigate right now as they prepare for upcoming European vacations and Mediterranean cruises.
None of these things mean travelers should avoid Europe.
But they do reinforce why having professional travel support matters more than ever.
Thoughtful travel planning today is not just about choosing a hotel or cruise line.
It is about:
- Monitoring travel developments
- Staying ahead of logistical changes
- Creating realistic itineraries
- Building flexibility into the trip
- Helping travelers pivot when needed
- Having someone available when unexpected situations happen
This is also where I spend a significant amount of time helping my clients.
When flights change…
when excursions get canceled…
when transportation plans shift…
when travelers are unsure how world events may impact their trip…
They do not have to figure it out alone.
Because my job is not simply booking hotels and flights.
My job is helping clients navigate the entire travel experience with confidence.
Why Working with a Travel Advisor Matters More Than Ever
Travel today is incredible.
But it is also more layered than it used to be.
There are more logistics.
More moving parts.
More operational changes.
More reasons thoughtful travel planning matters.
And after this trip, I am even more convinced that having an experienced travel advisor in your corner can completely change how you experience travel.
Not because problems never happen.
But because when they do, you already have a strategy.
And that makes all the difference.
If a Mediterranean cruise, Italy itinerary, Barcelona stay, or European vacation has been sitting on your bucket list, I would love to help you create a trip that feels intentional, balanced, exciting, and easy to navigate from beginning to end.
Because the goal is not just getting there.
It is experiencing it well.
